“Rome was not built in a day.” This common quote is frequently abbreviated. The full quote is

“Rome was not built in a day,

but they were laying bricks every hour.”

~John Heywood, English playwright

So you want to implement AI? Join the club.

What “bricks” have you been laying (if any) and how long have you been laying them? Do you even know why you want to adopt AI (or any other technology) or how it will benefit your small to medium business?

Let me suggest a few “bricks” you should consider laying before chasing the next hot technology trend.

People:

  • Do you have people with the competency and the capabilities to implement or use this new technology?
  • (Bonus) Have you considered the impact of this new technology on how your people work currently?

Process

  • Do you have established repeatable processes that are well understood, followed, and documented?
  • (Bonus) Have you performed a business process re-engineering effort e.g. Lean Six Sigma, to optimize your processes?

Technology

  • Is your technology stack understood and standardized across your business (aka no shadow IT)?
  • (Bonus) Do you understand the dependencies that will be required to successfully implement this new solution?

Like Rome, a successful digital transformation effort takes time, continuous effort and investment. Let me know how I can help with making that a reality for your business. So you can quickly obtain the business outcomes you desire (although it won’t happen overnight).
